Lions from across Multiple District 31 gathered in Raleigh for the 2009 North Carolina Lions State Convention. The convention, held in conjunction with the North Carolina Lions Foundation and Council of Governors' quarterly meetings, was held at the North Raleigh Hilton from April 30 thru May 3.
Awards Presentation

Lion Tommy Brooks of District 31-F received the 100% District Governor’s Award from Lions Clubs International at the District Governors’ Banquet. The certificate was presented by Inter-national 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs (left) and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. District Governor Dave Martin (far right) was there as support.

State Convention Chairperson Herbert Justice of District 31-G received a Commendation from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The commen-dation was presented by International 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III.

Lion Michael H. Schwartz of District 31-E received a Commendation from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The commendation was presented by International 1st Vice President Eber-hard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III.

Lion Keith Peedin of the Smithfield Lions Clubs in District 31-H received a Leadership Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by International 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Carlton Weeks.

Lion Dan Boudreau of the Western Harnett Lions Club in District 31-F received a Leadership Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by In-ternational 1st Vice President Eber-hard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Dave Martin.

Lion Oscar Doc Evans of the Sparta Lions Club in District 31-B received a Leadership Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by International 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Jerry Mertz.

Lion Ray West (second left) of Hendersonville Lions Club in District 31-A received a Leadership Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by International 1st Vice President Eber-hard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Mike Covell.

Lion Mike Flora (second left) of Rocky Mount Evening Lions Club in District 31-J received a Presidential Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by International 1st Vice President Eber-hard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Alex Thannikkary.

Lion Jim Walker (second left) of Unionville Lions Club in District 31-E received a Presidential Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by International 1st Vice President Eber-hard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Gordon McAdams.

Lion Steve Wilson (second left) of the Oxford Lions Club in District 31-G received a Presidential Medal from International President Albert Brandel at the District Governors’ Banquet. The award was presented by Inter-national 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs and 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III. He was nominated by District Governor Jerry Day.

Convention Golf Tournament
Family Fun Night
International 1st Vice President Eberhard Wirfs (center) and his wife, Margit, joined International 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs III and his wife, Lion Judy, during Fun Night where they were entertained by the Little German Band & Dancers of Raleigh.
The team of Fred Huscher, Glenn Day, Leon Pryor and Ivy Iversen took top honors at the 2009 North Carolina Lions State Golf Tournament, claiming the first place team prize with a score of 59. Two other teams also scored a 59, causing tournament officials to look at scorecards to make a determination.
Convention Chairperson Herbert Justice and Past District Governor Carlton Metts hold a banner welcoming Eberhard Wirfs and his wife, Margit, as they arrive at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. A delegation of North Carolina Lions were on hand to greet the international 1st vice president, along with 2nd Vice President Sid L. Scruggs, upon their arrival from a trip to international headquarters in Oak Brook, IL.
Thirty-six people participated in the 2009 North Carolina Lions State Convention Golf Tournament that was held at the RGA Golf Course in Raleigh. There were nine, four-person teams that played in the 18-hole tournament. Prizes were awarded to the fop three teams. Golfers Lacy Presnell Jr., David Martin, Don Henry and Harvey Whitley were awarded prizes for the "closest to the pin" contest on the #3, #7, #12 and #15 holes.

Foundation Honors Denton Lion
Lion Theresa Munyon, a visually impaired member of the Denton Lions Club in District 31-E, was honored during the District Governors’ Banquet by the North Carolina Lions Foundation for selling more than 200 books of raffle tickets for Camp Dogwood. Camp Dogwood Chairperson Carlton Metts (left) and Foundation President James Walker made the presentation.
Raising Money for White Cane
The Tail Twisters Breakfast & Auction raised $3,637, with proceeds going to the North Carolina Lions Foundation for its Humanitarian/White Cane Fund. Lions Larraine Dupree (left) and Andy Lilliston await their turn to show off items that Lion Joe Silvers could auction off. Part of the total was $1,427 raised through the sale of tickets for door prizes. The auction & raffle is a favorite event at the North Carolina Lions State Convention.
Vision Screening Held at State Convention
The See the 21st Century Vision Van made a stop at the North Carolina Lions State Convention. Sponsored by the Cary Lions Club in District 31-G, 20 people had their eyes examined and received a consultation by Dr. Lisa Fuller, a member of the Cary club. Of those screened, 14 were referred for further examination, said Lion Mike Howard, the vision van coordinator for the North Carolina Lions Foundation.
