Brown, Wall Named To Hall Of Fame

Past District Governor John B. Wall of District 31-D was inducted into the North Carolina Lions Hall of Fame during our state convention. Wall, a former secretary-treasurer of the Council of Governors, is a member of the Walkertown Lions club.

Past District Governor Shaw Brown was honored post-humously in the Lions Hall of Fame. Brown was a charter member of the Mooresville Lions Club that chartered in 1939. He held every office in the club. He served as district governor in 1974-75. A dormitory building at Camp Dogwood was named in his honor.

International Awards

Lions Receive Honors from International President

   An unprecedented number of prestigious medals and certificates were presented at the 85th annual state convention. It was a rare opportunity to have a sitting international president present his ad-ministration’s medals. He presented each recipient one of his personal label pins.

   Three Lions were awarded the International Presidential Medal, the second highest award in the association. They were Past District Governor Larry Gasperson of District 31-A, PDG I. Frank Brooks of District 31-G, and PDG Johnny Berry of District 31-B.

   Five Lions received the International Leadership Medal, which is the third highest international award. Those honored were Lion Susan Dailey, VDG Dave Martin, VDG Carlton Weeks, PDG Diane Whitley, and PDG John Kearney, who is the secretary of the North Carolina Lions Foundation.

   The international president presented a leadership medal to four Lions for their efforts in increasing membership through the international Team 20K program. They were PDG David Boyd of District 31-H, VDG Mike Covell of District 31-A, Lion Albert Locklear of District 31-F, and Lion Robert Sprinkle of District 31-B.

   Lion Patrick McLaren of District 31-H received a leadership medal for his untiring work in extension and forming new clubs.

   Five International Presidents’ Certificates of Appreciation were awarded.

Two Lions received the certificates for their work in developing the North Carolina Lions’ partnership pro-gram with the NC Division of Emergency Management. They were received by PDG Ron Kelly of District 31-F and PDG Paul Bledsoe of District 31-D. Two certificates were awarded to District Governor John T. James and VDG Michael Schwartz for their work in the transition of District 31-C The district will dissolve at the end of this Lions’ year. The remaining certificate went to Lion Mike Hopkins.

Tournament Round-Up

Forty-seven golfers played in the convention golf tournament at the Pleasant Ridge Golf Course.

   The players were divided into 12 teams. A three-hole playoff between two teams determined the winner of the competition. A tie-breaker also determined third and fourth place.

  In team competition, 1st place went to Team 1; second place to Team 10; third place to Team 3; fourth place to Team 11; and fifth place to Team 8.

   Lion Jamie Lockhart won the closest to the pin contest on Hole 4, a 171-yard par three. Lion Jon Ramsey won the contest on the 182-yard Hole 11; and Connie Henry, wife of vice district governor-elect Don Henry, won the contest on the 162-yard Hole 17.

  Chairperson Gene Everette was pleased with the participation. "The weather was great, we had great participation and I think everyone had a good time."

Presidential Visits

Lions International President Mahendra Amarasuriya visited the Lions' Eye Center at Wake Forest University. The president also took a bus trip to Camp Dogwood.

More than 455 Lions and guests were registered to attend the convention Lions International President Mahendra Amarasuriya visited Old Salem while touring Winston Salem Lions approved changes to the Constitution & Bylaws during the General Business Session.
